What does it take to encourage children (young ones as well as adult one!) to eat properly? Israeli author Liora Houbara, a clinical dietician with experience in Western-clinical treatment methods and Chinese medicine, healing herbs, and nutrition, has created a fun and useful book about teaching children the values of eating correctly.Adam is a youngster who refuses to eat fruits and vegetable, preferring only those elements of his diet that don't have color (read nutrition) and candy bars. One day he is ill and is unable to join his friends in playing in the park. While lying listlessly in bed a little dwarf all dressed in clothes that include fruits and vegetables visits him, instructs him that the reason he has no energy is because he doesn't eat correctly. He then offers Adam a plate at a time of the five colors of good foods: green (apples, lettuce, cucumbers, grapes), red (tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, red peppers), yellow (bananas, carrots, melons, oranges), white (onions, cauliflower, parsnips) and purple (blueberries, eggplant, blackberries). Adam, with the dwarf's help, discovers that he loves the flavors and suddenly feels healthy and happy that he now appreciates a healthy diet and newfound energy. The text is simple and entertaining with a fine interplay with parental figures (hopefully parents will read this important book, too!) and excellent illustrations. Were that there were more books of this caliber to help reverse the current epidemic of obesity and poor eating habits. Grady Harp, June 13
